Our children are growing up fast

For over 20 years, our generous supporters have helped Open Arms give orphaned and abandoned children in Malawi a home.

It has been an unforgettable journey so far, with ups and downs along the way. Now we’re proud that some of our children, who have spent their whole lives as part of our family, have been given the opportunity to attend some of the finest schools in Malawi.

It’s a fantastic achievement that has only been made possible thanks to supporters like you.

Like any family, we are keen that our children get the best education that they can. For many Malawian children, the chance to receive formal education disappears when they reach the end of primary school.

Thanks to you we can support our children with regular schooling, IT lessons and tutoring to give them the best chance of achieving their full potential.

In the last year, we’ve reached an important milestone in our history. Norman and Eric, two children from our Foster Houses, completed their first year at Kamuzu Academy, the country’s most prestigious boarding school.

They’ve truly excelled, with as in many of their subjects; admittedly there was a C, but we can’t imagine Mandarin is easy to get to grips with! We’re delighted that their House Master had nothing but kind words and glowing reports about them. While the high point of their first year, they tell us, was learning to swim!

Making us very Proud

“Seeing Norman and Eric achieve good results has made us very proud. When they arrived as tiny babies, we could not have predicted that they would one day achieve entrance to the prestigious Kamuzu Academy.” - Rose Phiri, Open Arms’ Senior Matron

Children do grow up fast. And we’re thrilled to announce that soon Norman and Eric will be joined by Chikondi and Nelifa who have also passed the entrance exams to Kamuzu Academy and will be joining their foster cousins in September.

Meanwhile, Wilson, Agness and Mary have all passed their entrance exams for Blantyre Baptist Academy, a very well thought of Secondary School that’s within a reasonable distance of the Foster Houses.

And Aubrey has just finished his first year working as an apprentice to our foreman, where he has gained a great deal of confidence and independence in both his work and studies.

We couldn’t be any prouder of the achievements of these children, and our thanks go not only to all our supporters, but also to our House Mothers and tutors, who continue to support them every step of the way.
