...The Future!

It doesn't stop here....

  • Due to recurrent crop failures in Malawi it is becoming increasingly difficult to fulfil the Home's objective of returning children at the age of 2 + to their birth village. Often their grandparents are already caring for many children from their extended families. This means congestion in Open Arms Infant Home and an inability to accept vulnerable newly born infants into care.
  • To alleviate this problem Harrogate House was built, and opened in February 2004. Housing up to 12 two to five year old children and their independent carers.
  • The home has endless problems with power and water supply. Increasing demand on our hydro-electricity generating stations in Malawi , combined with the effect of environmental degradation, is leading to increasingly more erratic power supply. This is due to the environmental degradation along the banks of the single generating river- Shire. A new generator is being purchased to provide a reliable auxiliary power supply for the whole campus.

Other future projects planned include:

  • Replacement of the all purpose Venture motor vehicle, which is now nine years old.
  • Possible splitting of the operation into 2 independent sections.
    • a) Outreach
    • b) Residential Home based care
  • Conversion of one room in the home to become an isolation ward with appropriate furniture and equipment and enlargement by extension of another.
  • Continuous upgrading of laundry room and renewal of overworked laundry equipment.
  • Provision of sanitary platform pit latrines in outreach community centers where we operate.
  • Third phase five years +. Purchase of good quality second and third township house and installation of professional Malawian house mothers and fathers.
  • The largest project over the next 5 years will be the construction of Open Arms 2.
  • A plot of land has already been secured and plans are in progress to build a second home near Lake Malawi.
