...What It Costs!
Funding
The home is entirely dependent upon charitable donations for its’ upkeep and development.
Many organizations such as churches, schools, trust funds and businesses from all over the world enable Open Arms to achieve their objectives.
Running Costs
The main monthly expenditure of Open Arms Infant Home is on salaries and due to the lack of availability locally, imported baby formula milk. Open Arms employs three matrons, 38 full time caregivers, grounds men and watchmen/security guards and casual garden workers, to a total of 56 staff. Each employee is provided with one main meal per day (day and night shifts).
The infants nutritional needs are provided by the home, as are medicines, medical consultations and hospital care for any sick babies. Many of the babies suffer HIV/Aids related illnesses and intensive specialist care is frequently required at the nearby Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital, Malawi's largest governmental hospital.
Open Arms Infant Home owns the grounds and buildings in which it is situated and therefore incurs no rental costs, however, the main buildings and roads are approximately 50 years old and need constant attention and maintenance.
The outreach programme, as described, currently requires approximately 10% of our annual income to run successfully.
