...What we do!

Open Arms is a transition home for orphans. Our aim is to return each child to it's existing community whenever possible.

We operate in three phases:

Phase 1
  • The original building accommodates 40 infants under two years of age.
Phase 2
  • Harrogate House is the home for 12 children between two and five years.
  • Nursery education is delivered here by a qualified Malawian teacher.
Phase 3
  • "Rose's House" is the first of a series of foster houses that have been purchased and are supported and administered by Open Arms.
  • Two foster parents a foster sibling and four five year olds from Harrogate House have become the first foster family at "Rose's House"

Outreach Programme

  • Provides support for grandparents or relatives in their care for returned children from Open Arms Infant Home (returnees).
  • Assesses health and nutrition status of each returnee initially on a monthly basis.
  • Medical support to non related orphaned children in villages of returnees.
  • Constructs Outreach buildings (Nursery School and Feeding Stations).
  • Trains Village ladies in basic nursery education.
  • Establishes small scale village based industry which supports the local centre (e.g.  school uniform production).

These village based projects are generally administered through village committees and would not be possible without significant support from a range of donors old and new friends

Paediatric Hospice
  • The terminal nature of some of the children's illnesses, normally Aids related, leads to the secondary role of Open Arms as a paediatric Hospice.
