...Who We Are!

Open Arms is managed by two boards of trustees, one in Malawi and one in the United Kingdom, where Open Arms is established as a registered charity.

The home directly employs 56 Malawians. Many local and international volunteers with medical and caring backgrounds, give their time and expertise for free.

The home is run by Neville Bevis, Senior Matron Rose Phiri and also Deputy Matrons Mrs Gladys Muamba and Stella Chiphangwi. Volunteers assist with the running of the home.

The management team is answerable to the local board of trustees which is properly incorporated in Malawi under the “Trustees Act”. It is also a registered NGO in Malawi.

Rose comes from Lilongwe (Malawi’s main city) and is a state registered nurse and midwife. She also has training and experience in family planning, nursing and public health nursing. She is a tremendous support to Open Arms and her appointment means that more of the nursing needs of the children can be met without them having to be moved to hospital.

The daily 24 hour routine of bathing and feeding the babies is covered by 38 carers working in shifts with a cook and two housekeepers.
There is a steady stream of international volunteers who live in the volunteers’ house for periods of up to three months.

The home is set on four hectares of land which contains a small farm supplied by two wells and a commercial poultry unit.
Six estate workers are employed here led by Mr Johnam Unjyika. Security is provided by five night time and one day time guard.
