The gift of life this Christmas for little Ezra
When Ezra Mkandawire was abandoned on the streets of Blantyre in January 2015, he was just eight months old. When babies are abandoned, we never know the circumstances leading up to their family’s tough choice. In Ezra’s case, we can only assume that his mother was unable to provide for this little boy, who was suffering from a hernia, as she left him with him his medical notes. Perhaps she had trusted that he would be found and given the best chance to thrive that she could not provide? Perhaps she had sensed that Ezra was dealing with more than a hernia, that all was not well …
At the time of his abandonment the city had seen two and a half days of solid rain and floods were building around the southern region of Malawi. All Ezra had were the clothes he was wearing – and, as mentioned, his medical notes, he was suffering from a hernia. Otherwise, he seemed OK.
Within a couple of weeks it became clear that this beautiful baby boy was very unwell. We rushed him to hospital. The scan confirmed it: little Ezra had a life-threatening hole in his tiny heart.
Dr Kennedy, a consultant Pediatrician at the Queen Elizabeth hospital in Blantyre and an Associate Professor of Pediatrics and Child Health at the College of Medicine in the University of Malawi, picked up Ezra’s case. We are so grateful to him. His swift actions meant that, within days, Ezra had been approved for lifesaving surgery by a charity called Chain of Hope.
Chain of Hope Children’s Charity
The Chain of Hope of hope children’s charity is a wonderful charity that runs a global referral programme to help provide treatment to children with heart disease who would otherwise not survive.
It is with huge thanks to our donors and to Chain of Hope, that Ezra is on his way to the Leipzig heart centre for an operation that will enable him to live a normal and happy life well into the future. Without it his life expectancy would be shortned to just 5 – 10 years old.
Our Appeal for Ezra helped to raise over £3,000 and we are hugely grateful to everyone who donated. you can follow the appeal here or text EZRA55 £3 to 70070 to donate £3!
Ezra ready for life saving surgery
Ezra and Juliana arrived at the Leipzig heart centre in Germany*, yesterday (10th December) for the specialist cardiac care he needs. We are sure you will join us in wishing him and Juliana well on their journey to mend his little heart, and will update you on his progress when we can.
*Ezra was originally bound for the UK, but schedules have allowed an earlier operation at the heart centre in Leipzig.
