Welcome to Otto

Not long after John left, the Social Welfare Office and Psychiatrist from Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital arrived with a newborn boy. His pregnant mother was first noticed by a psychiatric nurse at Queen’s some weeks ago, as her behaviour was unusual. Otto was born on the streets of Blantyre and well wishers helped him and his disturbed mother to the Hospital, where the mother tried to sell him to the nurses.

Welcome to Otto

It was resolved that the mother needed help and a place was found for her at the Zomba Mental Hospital, but the next morning she had disappeared. Amazingly she was again brought to the hospital by people on the street, who noticed her trying to feed avocado to a newborn baby and then observed the hospital bracelet on Otto’s arm. It will take time to see if she will recover from the psychosis and trace any relatives, and in that period Open Arms will be happy to care for Otto.
