We’ve all talked about how we’d like to do more, support charities, get fit and really see the world but you don’t often get the opportunity to. With Cycle Malawi, your opportunity is right here!
Charity challenges first appeared about 20 years ago and they have grown from strength to strength since then. They are a great fundraiser but also give you the chance to move out of your comfort zone, challenge yourself and really experience the difference that charities make.
Cycle Malawi takes place in September. The 10 day trip, with a 5 day, 375 kilometre bike ride will be a life changing experience. We’re incredibly proud that we can enable our supporters to achieve amazing personal goals while at the same time helping the vulnerable children of Malawi.
Here are some of the reasons our challengers are taking part;
1 – To support the children of Malawi
You will have seen many stories about the children that we care for and how their lives have been turned around by the support that you give. Children like Thoko. Looking at her today, it’s hard to imagine how life started out for this beautiful little girl. Coming into Mangochi on the day that she was born, she was a vulnerable bundle in desperate need for someone to care for her. She’d survived a traumatic birth, but sadly her mother didn’t, and Thoko was left as a tiny orphan with brain damage and HIV.
With the help of Open Arms she has been nurtured and nursed through the precious first years of her life and while her Cerebral Palsy is not curable, she has a full and busy life with her little buddies and carers. She is much loved by everyone at Harrogate House and with one of the most infectious smiles you have ever seen, it’s easy to see why.
Sadly there are many babies that are not as lucky as Thoko, but by taking part in Cycle Malawi you will be raising money to help us secure a happy and heathy future for some of them.
2 – To rise to the challenge
A 10 day bike ride over 375 kilometres in southern Africa will be no easy trip. There will be some long days in the saddle and some climbing involved. However, as long as you are reasonably fit and have lots of determination the challenge is open to you. You’d be surprised at what you can achieve when you put your mind to it!
At Open Arms we will support you from the time you enquire about the trip right until you land back in the UK. You will get to meet your fellow team mates, share training plans and preparation tips in our fundraising group. We will also help you raise funds with ideas, support through social media and any other advice you may need before the big event.
Classic Challenges are our partners for this cycle challenge. They are experts in leading and managing charity challenges abroad. Their team will make sure that you have everything you need while you are in Malawi and will be with you every day of your trip.
It will be the challenge of a lifetime and one that we promise you’ll never forget.
3 – To explore the very heart of Malawi
With the cold and wet weather of the UK it is difficult to imagine what it will be like to cycle off the beaten track in Malawi. You will absorb first hand, the breathtaking views of sparkling Lake Malawi right from your saddle.
Together with your team mates, you will pedal along its shores passing un-spoilt villages and small towns. You will see village life first hand as well as the incredible wildlife of Liwonde National Park. We will show you a true bikers and walkers paradise!
4 – To be part of a great team
As well as challenging yourself and raising much needed funds to support Open Arms, you will be joined by a committed team of like-minded people. Everyone is welcome to join as long as you are up for the challenge.
By becoming part of this special team, you will have the support of people on cycling days, through your days out of the saddle and in your celebrations at the end. You’ll make friends and memories to last a lifetime.
5 – This is more than just another charity cycle challenge
At Open Arms, we want to make sure that you really experience the work that we do and see the difference that we make. This is why we have added in a visit to our Infant Homes and a local village to see some of the outreach work we do and how it really does change lives.
We’re obviously passionate about Malawi and everything it has to offer, so we are giving you the opportunity get off your bike and go out on safari with one of our guides. Here you’ll see hippos, crocodile, elephants and antelope along the floodplains. You can’t get much better than that!
