Make your Christmas gift go even further with The Big Give!

We are excited to once again be taking part in the Big Give Christmas Challenge this year, where we are aiming to raise £8,000 to support early childhood development in Malawi.

Kicking off on Giving Tuesday (November 29th) and running for a week, this is a fantastic opportunity to have your Christmas donation to Open Arms doubled! Yes, DOUBLED!

The situation

Families in rural Malawi are often very poor, with 80% of the population relying on subsistence farming for their food and income and most without access to any medical care. Children in rural communities are therefore extremely vulnerable to malnutrition and preventable illnesses, with over 6% dying before the age of 5 and 37% suffering from stunted growth due to poverty and malnourishment.

Many children also miss out on early years education, which is vital for their cognitive, social and emotional development, as well as their future success in both primary and secondary school - trapping them in a cycle of poverty.

With many families currently facing significant food shortages and poverty due to a weakening of the economy, skyrocketing inflation rates and a poor harvest following severe storms and flooding earlier this year, we are continuing to focus our fundraising efforts on our vital Community Outreach Programme, which is already well placed to address the challenges Malawian children face.

Our solution

The Open Arms Community Outreach Programme helps vulnerable children, who would otherwise be placed in long-term care, to thrive at home.

Our matron-led team offers regular monitoring, expertly tailored advice and essentials such as food, agricultural packs, medical care, clothing and more to nearly 300 families in Southern Malawi, with the aim of promoting self-reliance in the long term.

Moreover, our nine Nursery Schools give approximately 600 children under age 5 access to early years education, which includes a daily, nutritious meal to combat malnutrition.

How The Big Give works

Thanks to some very generous supporters, we have an incredible £4,000 in pledged donations making up our match funding pot this year.

Any donations made via the Big Give between 12pm Tuesday 29th November - 12pm Tuesday 6th December will be doubled, until the match fund pot runs out.

Any additional donations will add vital funds to our overall total and help to sustain our Community Outreach and Nursery School programmes.

Please note: Donations need to be made through the Big Give website in order to be doubled. (You can still donate via our website or over the phone, but please note these donations will not be doubled.)
