School of Play Staff Embark on a Life-Changing Journey with Open Arms

In October, Open Arms was privileged to host two dedicated members of staff from our partners at School of Play. Sean and Abbie, filled with enthusiasm and compassion, dedicated their October half-term to volunteering at Blantyre Infant Home. During their visit, they also spent time assisting families through Outreach visits and made a stop at Tisawataye Nursery School.

What made their visit even more special was the heartfelt generosity of their friends, colleagues, pupils and families, who contributed suitcases full of donations. The Open Arms team was not only grateful for the thoughtful contributions but also impressed by the sheer volume of essentials that could be vacuum packed into those suitcases!

Reflecting on her experience, Abbie expressed, “I can’t explain how life-changing the whole experience was. I now see things differently since I’ve come home, and I just can’t wait to go back.” Such sentiments echo the transformative power of volunteering and the profound impact it can have on one's perspective.

Sean, equally moved by the experience, shared, “I’ll never tire of talking about my trip to Open Arms. It’s the only place I’ve visited where I felt I could help to make a difference. It was an absolute privilege going over, and we're keen to keep supporting the great work you do however we can.”

School of Play, an organisation providing holiday clubs and wrap-around care in Manchester, has cultivated a meaningful partnership with Open Arms Malawi. Having successfully organised fundraisers for the charity, they are now setting their sights on sending more staff in the future to strengthen their long-term relationship with Open Arms and contribute to the charity’s ongoing mission.

Ryan Harris, Director of School of Play, was inspired to forge a partnership after learning about the impactful work carried out by Open Arms. Expressing his commitment, Harris stated, “We are keen to build a long-term partnership with the charity and support their incredible efforts, whether that’s through fundraisers or in-person visits in Malawi.” The shared dedication of Open Arms and the School of Play exemplifies the transformative power of collaboration, proving that by working together, we can create meaningful change and provide a brighter future for vulnerable children in Malawi.
