Two (and a half!) of our supporters started our virtual sponsored walking campaign - Miles 4 Malawi - in 2021 as part of our regular calendar of events hosted by Open Arms. These supporters are determined to continue walking until they 'reach' Malawi, keeping us in the loop and inspiring us all with their efforts as they go!
Penny writes that herself, her husband Rob and their miniature schnauzer, Hector, decided to take on the challenge of virtually walking from Harrogate to Blantyre (a 12,361km distance!) to raise funds for Open Arms.
"We have now completed 82% of the walk and are making our way steadily across Africa. We have crossed Europe, the Sahara desert, survived the dangers of the Democratic Republic of Congo and nearly reached the border of Rwanda. All virtually of course. In reality we have walked in The Yorkshire Dales, The Lake District, Scotland, Shropshire, Dorset, Norfolk, Devon and Cornwall and I have probably missed a few other places along the way.
We have had great fun adding our steps every day (I have now done nearly 7 million) and googling the places we have been walking through, mainly desert over the last months.
We are going to continue until we have completed the whole walk ourselves, probably close to 2 years of walking. Imagine how many steps our small dog will have done by the time we have finished!
We also raised some money for Open Arms Malawi along the way.
It has been a wonderful thing to do during restrictions due to Covid and we wish those doing the challenge each year lots of luck and hope you can raise some much needed funds for the charity.
