Kelvin’s story

Kelvin arrived at Open Arms in April 2021 weighing just 4.96 Kgs. He was found abandoned near Namitete Primary School so his exact date of birth is sadly unknown.

He was referred to the Child Protection Worker for the area and was reported to the local Police Station.

The Police tried to trace his relatives but in the meantime, Kelvin had a safe and secure home at Open Arms where he received the much-needed infant care he needed to recover from such a traumatic start to his life.

Agnes was one of his three care givers and she nurtured him and monitored his development until a permanent guardian was found through the Social Welfare Office.

In July we were delighted to hear that Kelvin had been found a permanent foster family. The team facilitated several visits to support their bonding and Kelvin moved in with them to start his new chapter.

Thanks to your support, last year Blantyre and Mangochi Infant Homes cared for 56 babies from birth to two years old. This care reduces their risk of death and gives them a chance to regain their health while being found permanent homes with a family guardian in their communities or through fostering.

24 babies like Kelvin were referred to the Infant Homes in 2020 and 40 children were successfully rehomed within their community thanks to your support.
