Over the past month, our supporters came together to help fill tummies, feed minds and fuel potential for nursery school students in Malawi. Thanks to your generosity, we’ve raised an amazing £4,500 — enough to provide a daily nutritious meal for every child in one of our nursery schools for an entire year.
Thank you for giving this life-changing support, so that children don’t have to sit through the day distracted by hunger. With full stomachs, they can concentrate in class, learn their numbers and letters, build confidence, and enjoy the simple joy of playing and making friends!
Tisawataye Nursery School welcomes over 50 young learners every week, served by a volunteer teacher, teaching assistant, cook and assistant cook.
Each day is filled with singing, dancing and all-important numeracy and literacy lessons - the building blocks for further education and future opportunities.
To support their learning as well as their health and development, each student also receives a warming and filling bowl of likuni phala for lunch - a fortified and highly nutritious porridge.
For some, it will be their only meal of the day, and a huge incentive for coming to school.
This simple bowl of food is absolutely crucial in a country where 1 in 3 under five-year-olds are stunted due to malnutrition - not only affecting their ability to attend school, but their overall school performance, long-term health, and future prospects.
We see the longer‑term impact of this support in children like former Tisawataye pupil Gracious. Thanks to his regular attendance and the meals he received at nursery, he is now thriving in Year 1 at primary school, despite a very challenging start in life.
And Gracious’ story is just one of many. Hundreds of children have already benefited from our Community Nursery Schools, and many more will do so in the years ahead - all thanks to your continued support.
