In Malawi, one in five households look after an orphaned or abandoned child, but with 71% of the population living under the international poverty line (World Bank, 2023) and surviving on just over £1 a day, the costs of taking on an extra child can simply be too much. As a result, these children often do not have adequate nutrition, shelter or care, nor do they have access to education or healthcare.

This is why Open Arms' Community Outreach Programme exists and by sponsoring a child in their community today, you can help give them the little extra they need to grow up healthy and achieve their potential in a loving, family home.

Why sponsor a child through Open Arms?

At Open Arms, we believe every child has the right to survival and development and our aim is to give vulnerable children in Malawi the chance to achieve their potential within the love and security of a family home.

Therefore, once a child returns to their community from our Infant Homes, we continue to monitor and support them through our Community Outreach Programme - ensuring they not only transition and settle well, but continue to thrive in their new home environment.

Through regular visits, the Outreach Team monitor children’s health and development, provide basic essentials and medical care and offer professional advice and support to families where necessary.

In Malawi, it is mostly grandparents who take care of orphaned or abandoned children. This is despite the fact that older people have little or no economic support (UNICEF, 2019). As a result, families sometimes struggle to support these children.

For these families, Open Arms also provides a small monthly payment and your regular contribution will go towards this additional support.

But we can't do this alone - we need your help.

There are over 300 children and families currently benefiting from our Outreach Programme and by sponsoring a child today, you can help to keep this vital service going.

When you sign up to support, you will:

Receive a welcome profile which contains some background information and a recent photograph of your child.
Receive personalised written updates twice a year, which include photographs and details of milestones so that you can follow your child’s development.
Be able to ask us any specific questions you may have about your child.

But most importantly, you will be helping a vulnerable child to grow up healthy and supported in a loving, family home.
